A right royal gaffe

When you are a commoner, you can invite whoever you like to your wedding but when you are a royal there must surely be some protocol to be observed.

I read this morning that Crown Prince Felipe of Spain and his wife, Princess Letizia have not been invited to the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. Only King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia have received invites.

What makes the snub to Felipe even more surprising is that space had been found at Westminster Abbey for the owner of a Spanish tile company who donated generously to Charles’s charities, Manuel Colonques, and his wife, Delfina.

His firm, Porcelanosa, met a “significant proportion” of the costs of a lavish charity dinner at Buckingham Palace in February.

Of course, Charles was a guest of honour at the wedding of Felipe and Letizia in Madrid in 2004. He attended both the ceremony and the sumptuous banquet that followed.

It now seems that a nervous courtier has suggested that Charles had asked for Felipe and Letizia to be added to the guest list. Too late William, don’t bother trying to book into Torrevieja for your honeymoon!
