Will motorists take any notice?

In an attempt to save fuel in the light of soaring oil prices, the Spanish government have decided to cut the speed limit on motorways from 120km per hour to 110km per hour. The claim is that this will enable drivers to slash 15 per cent of their fuel costs amounting to a 1.48 billion Euro saving in oil imports.

Spain also intends to cut the price of commuter and short-distance rail tickets by 5 per cent in a bid to encourage drivers to leave their cars at home.

Driver’s associations fear that the measure may actually increase road accidents pointing out that a similar drop in speed limits during the 1976 oil crisis did just that.

The new limits will come into affect on March 7th, the question is “will drivers take any notice?” From what I have seen on the motorways, there are many  drivers  who ignore the present limit of 120Kph let alone a reduced limit of 110kmph.
