Alicante's second castle

The Castillo de San Fernando was built in 1813 on Tossal Hill as part of Alicante's defence against Napoleon's advance.

A recent study claims that the vertical fractures which can be seen throughout the tower, as well as other cracks mean that is in danger of sliding down the hill damaging surrounding properties.

The structure was built onto the hillside without foundations. The stones that were used are not bound together and there are hollows inside the walls where rainwater drains. Furthermore there are ditches surrounding the tower where water has eroded the soil. Faults in the land also contribute to the problem and were probably the reason for the ditches.

The study concludes that lot of work will be required to make the castle safe again. The main thing is to reduce the weight of the castle by removing to metres of filling.
