A costly business

In the whole of Spain it is reckoned that 50million euros a day are spent on prostitutes with the Valencian Community accounting for 2.3million euros of that amount.

According to studies, 6 percent of Spaniards habitually visit prostitutes.

Fifty percent of the "ladies" are claimed to be Latin American. Of the rest many are Eastern European. Most lack qualifications and are illegal immigrants to the country.

Prostitution is said to be the second most lucrative business in the world after arms trafficking earning more than even drug running. It is estimated to turn over between 5 and 7 trillion dollars annually.

Satisfying men's needs is obviously a costly business.
